A chemical tanker with 28 North Korean sailors on board which had been held by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean since November was released Tuesday.
According to the East African Seafarers Assistance Program, the tanker was freed after a US$3.5 million ransom was paid.
The Virgin Islands-owned and Singapore-operated MV Theresa VIII was seized on its way to Mombasa, Kenya. It had been moved to the pirates' stronghold, the coastal village of Haradhere in northern Somalia.
The European Union naval force said they will continue to monitor the situation as the ship heads out to sea.
