Members of the Brotherhood may be headed to Malaysia and Turkey, after being expelled from Qatar. — Reuters picKUALA LUMPUR, Sept 16 — Members of Egypt’s outlawed Muslim Brotherhood may be headed to Malaysia and Turkey, after being expelled from Qatar over the weekend, according to a recent news report.

Arabic international newspaperAsharq Al-Awsat quoted a senior Brotherhood member as claiming that the exiled members are likely to head to either country as they already have visas or residency permits there.

International Muslim Brotherhood Organisation secretary-general Ibrahim Mounir told the London-based paper that the documentation already available to their members would “make their living or residing there an easy matter”.

The Brotherhood — which was outlawed in Egypt following the ouster of President Mohamed Mursi — claimed on Saturday that seven of its members residing in Qatar were asked to leave the country.

Egypt’s Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim on Sunday was reported to have told a news conference that they are expecting Qatar to ask more than seven members of the Brotherhood “fugitives” to leave.

Turkish news portal Haberler.com quoted an Egyptian diplomatic source as saying that Qatar’s decision came after pressure from the United States, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations demanding a “serious” stance against some Brotherhood leaders.

Egyptian authorities have been on the hunt for members of the Muslim Brotherhood, who have been blamed for mass murders and violence and branded terrorists, especially after Mursi’s ouster by the-then army chief Abdel Fattah el-Sissi July 3, 2013.

Sissi, who eventually won a presidential election, vowed to stamp out the Brotherhood’s existence in Egypt, prompting authorities to arrest thousands of the organisation’s supporters. Hundreds have also reportedly been sentenced to death or long prison sentences.

Mursi, who was elected in 2012, is currently facing charges that include inciting violence and conspiring with a foreign power, and faces the death penalty if convicted.
