 Regardless of how you label the shootings in Plymouth on Thursday, it’s clear that the incel movement is one face of modern terrorism. We are dealing with an extremist ideology with a hateful motivation for violence against women.

This wasn’t the first act of violence by those radicalised in online incel communities. Prevent and other parts of Britain’s counterextremism and counterterrorism architecture treat incel ideologies as a serious threat, as do other countries. Canada has already charged one incel murderer using terrorism laws. 

But to truly deal with this problem we need to look beyond the British state and towards Big Tech.
