Manipur police arrest supporters of separatist

 Manipur police launched a crackdown against supporters of arrested self-styled external and defence minister Narengbam Samarjit of de-jure government of Manipur State Council.

Sources said that as many as seven persons who exhorted Samarjit on his arrival at Imphal Airport were arrested by the police during the past 24 hours.

Samarjit, the proclaimed minister of external affairs and defence of the government in exile in the UK was arrested by a team of NIA from Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi on his way back to Imphal on March 25.

On his arrival at Imphal Airport, on Monday, some among the crowd waiting for his arrival shouted “Long live Manipur”, “Victory to Samajit” while he was taken away by the police.

After registering a case in connection with the incident allegedly tantamount to exhorting the separatist agenda of Samarjit, police arrested as many as seven persons.

Sources said that after yesterday’s incident, a case was registered at Singjamei police station of Imphal West district three persons were arrested for allegedly shouting slogans 

They were Narengbam Bishorjit of Tera Loukrakpam Leikai, Naoroibam David of Naoremthong, and Narengbam Nonglen of Tera Loukrakpam Leikai.

In further crackdown, the police have picked up four more persons including general secretary Mayanglambam Tonlenjao of North East India Development Party (NEIDP), a political party  founded by Samarjit before he left for the UK to form the government in exile.

The police further picked three women supporters - N Tilotama and N Ranjana from Tera Loukrakpam Leikai and Naoroibam Medhabati, source said.

Samarjit, who is also the founder of Salai group of companies was brought to Imphal after taking a transit remand from Patiala Court. The judge has reportedly given the transit remand till March 31.
