‘Love jihad’: UP youth uses fake religious identity to ‘lure’ minor girl, elopes with her to Delhi

Bareilly: A 25-year-old Muslim youth has been arrested by the Amroha district police for allegedly concealing his religious identity to lure a 16-year-old girl and then eloping with her to Delhi.

On Sunday, the police said that two days ago, the minor girl left her house under the pretext of some work, but did not return home. Local residents informed her family members that she was spotted with a youth, identified as Afzal. Following this, the girl’s father lodged a complaint with the police to find his daughter.

Acting swiftly on the complaint, a police team, on Sunday, arrested the youth from Usmanpur area of Delhi and “rescued” the 16-year-old girl. The youth was taking her to the house of one of his relatives. The two were brought back to Amroha in a police jeep on Sunday, according to a report by The Times of India.

Girl says youth faked religious identity

The girl, after being rescued, claimed that Afzal lured her by faking his religious identity. She said that when she connected with him, he identified himself as Arman Kohli, a Hindu. “During questioning, the minor girl told the police that they were in contact for the last few months. She said the man (Afzal) lured her by saying that his name was Arman Kohli, and he was a Hindu. She also said that Afzal tried to convert her,” the report quoted an official as saying.

Youth booked under 'love jihad' law

The minor girl has sent for medical examination while the accused youth, who is a carpenter by profession, has been jailed. He has been booked under sections 363 (kidnapping) and 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the UP anti-conversion law.
