Top Maoist commander surrenders in Gadchiroli with AK-47; will get Rs 8.5 lakh: Left wing extremism

For the first time in 35 years, the Gadchiroli  police have recovered an AK-47 from a 'surrendered Maoist'. The weapon was recovered from a senior ‘commander’ of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) who surrendered on Thursday. Police say Vilas Kolha alias Dasru , 44, was number 3 in the Maoist combat hierarchy in Gadchiroli and was the commander of their North Gadchiroli division’s operations.
Vilas surrendered due to his feud with his superior over issues related to the dominance of Telugu-speaking Maoists in the top-tier of the Maoist hierarchy, and the mistreatment of local ‘adivasi’ operatives, including female operatives, sources said. “There are 149 cases registered against him in Gadchiroli, including over 25 cases of murder. He was involved in 58 cases of encounter with the police force,” a police source said. Vilas was also a member of the divisional committee of CPI (Maoist), which exercises supervision on combat and organisational affairs of the operatives.
Kolha will get Rs 8.5 lakh, the amount set as reward for information leading to his capture. He will get another Rs 1 lakh for the weapon, sources said. The AK-47 was his personal weapon, which he may have snatched from security personnel during encounters.

Sources said that Vilas would be a valuable quarry for information related to CPI (Maoist)’s operational and organisational set-up in Gadchiroli as he has been part of several combat formations at Etapalli, Gondia and Tipagadh
Since 2019, 35 Maoists have so far surrendered to the police as part of the state government’s surrender-cumrehabilitation programme, according to Gadchiroli district’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Shailesh Balkawade. “Out of the 35 surrendered Maoists, 10 were top leaders, which included four divisional committee members, two commanders, two deputy commanders, 26 platoon members and one member of the people’s militia, Balkawade said.
