Left wing Extremism: Gadchiroli cops leave Maoists red-faced calling their minor victim ‘Shantidoot’
NAGPUR: Manoj Hidko, 17, may not have been a police informer, for which Maoists shot him dead last week, but he is certainly the cops’ ‘Shantidoot’
or peace ambassador now. The murder of the minor by Maoists at his
native village of Bimankhoji in north Gadchiroli has become a means for
the police to embarass the killers.
The Maoists have so far murdered 17 civilians this year. Hidko was the first minor to be eliminated by the Maoists in last several years. They labelled him a police informer.
In fact, Hidko had been rounded up by the cops in the past as they suspected he was a Maoist operative, but was let off as nothing was found. He had then shifted to Rajnandgaon to find some job, but returned to his native village to resume studies.
Gadchiroli police have declared Hidko, who was trying to resume his education, a mascot of peace or ‘Shantidoot’ at the ‘Hoonkar rally’ against Maoist violence earlier this week. The rally by around 5,000 students culminated at the district sports stadium, where a human chain was prepared to create the image of the Mahatma Gandhi as the peace mascot.
Hidko is the third ‘Shantidoot’ of the Gadchiroli police after Bebi Madavi and Yugendra Meshram who too were eliminated by the Maoists in the past.
SP Shailesh Balkawade said Madavi was a graduate and Meshram had been a teacher. “Maoist leaders and their urban cadres are known to have themselves taken higher education but it seems they do not approve the tribals to do the same. Madavi and Meshram were educated and Hidko was planning to study further,’ he said.
