In a security alert on
Monday night, the US embassy said: “May 14, 2019, is the anniversary of
the US Embassy opening in Jerusalem, as well as related protests along
the Gaza periphery.
“Terrorist groups may choose the anniversary, which coincides with the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv (May 14-18), or Nakba Day (May 15), to conduct violent protests or an attack.”
The embassy warned “security incidents, including rocket fire, often take place without warning”, urging citizens to “remain vigilant” and “increase their security awareness”.
They added the general publish should be aware of their closest “shelter or protected space”.

Tensions
near the Israel-Gaza border have escalated since the beginning of May,
after two Israeli soldiers were injured by sniper fire from the Gaza
strip during the weekly protests at the Gaza-Israel border.
In response, the Israeli Air Force carried out an airstrike, killing two Palestinians.
Palestinian militants then launched hundreds of rockets at southern Israel, including Ashdod, Ashkelon and Be’er Sheva.
Over 200 were said to be injured as a result of the rockets, killing four.

Security
for the Eurovision grand final has already been ramped up, as a result
of the surge in cross-borer violence between Israel and Palestine.
This is the first time the Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Tel Aviv, after the nation’s Netta Barzilai won last year’s contest with her pop anthem Toy.
Israel’s hosting of the contest has been criticised, with pro-Palestinian activists calling for a boycott of the show after Eurovision organisers ignored their pleas to find an alternative host.
Protesters say Israel should not be given the right to host the contest due to the country’s treatment of Palestinians.

Madonna
was also blasted for agreeing to perform at the contest, but said:
“I’ll never stop playing music to suit someone’s political agenda nor
will I stop speaking out against violations of human rights wherever in
the world they may be.”
Last week a ceasefire went into effect, but prior to Eurovision contestants arriving for the opening ceremony, a group of human rights activists protested outside the event in Tel Aviv.
Israeli police later removed the pro-Palestine group of a dozen protesters.
