Post terror attack, cyber crime by fake Armymen on rise

INDORE: After the Pulwama terror attack, there has been surge in cyber fraudcases, wherein accused posing as Armymen dupe people by offering bikes at low prices, claiming that they got a discount from Army canteen. Once the advance money is received, the accused disappears.
Cyber police sub-inspector Manoj Rathore said, earlier one such fraud case was seen in a week. However, after the Pulwama terror attack, the complaints have increased to six in a day.

In last one week, more than 42 such cases have been filed. Police suspect that a particular gang has duped all the people since modus operandi of the accused in most of the cases is similar.

Explaining about the modus operandi of the accused, Rathore said, they first post an advertisement online for selling their bikes at economical rate. When they receive a call for enquiry, they claim themselves to be Army officer and try to play with emotions of people. Due to the terror attack, people don’t even bargain and agree to buy the vehicle on offered deal. The accused, then, ask them to pay some advance amount through online transaction.

On the day of delivery, accused inform them that the vehicle had been transferred to canteen, where he will not be allowed to enter. The buyers are then asked to pay the remaining amount so that the vehicle can be released from the canteen and delivered to them at the entrance gate. After the money is received, they switch off their mobile phones, he added.

Police said that the SIM cards used in the crime were also fake and belonged to other people.

“We have decided to issue a public advisory to stay alert from such fraudsters. In charges of all police stations have been asked to trace the mobile phones, which have gone missing in past years and identify whether they are being used in these cases. Victims should immediately inform police about such fraud as if the payment has been made online we can freeze it within 24 hours and not after that,” SSP Ruchi Vardhan Mishra said.
