Freeze funds of terror groups that are on UN sanctions list: US directs Pakistan after Pulwama attack

Washington: The United States of America on Friday voiced its concerns over increasing terrorist activities in South Asia and exhorted Pakistan to “freeze without delay” the funds and financial assets of terror networks and leaders who feature in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions list.
The US had yesterday expressed grief and angst over the brutal attack carried out by Pakistan-based banned terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) that killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force jawans in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama on Thursday. The White House also supported all actions against JeM.
“Pakistan outlawed Jaish-e-Mohammed in 2002. However, the group still operates in Pakistan. The US designated JeM as a foreign terrorist organization in December 2001, and we fully support actions to prevent them from conducting future attacks,” a US State Department said, according to news agency PTI. The UNSC included JeM in its 1267 Sanctions List in 2001, which also includes the Islamic State and al Qaeda.
“We expect Pakistan to uphold its responsibilities pursuant to UN Security Council resolutions to deny safe haven and support for terrorists and to freeze without delay the funds and other financial assets or economic resources of individuals and entities on the UNSC 1267 sanctions list,” the spokesperson said, according to PTI.
The attack in Pulwama’s Awantipora area was carried out around 3:30 pm after a suicide bomber, identified as local boy Adil Ahmad Dar, in a Mahindra Scorpio car loaded with 350 kilograms of explosives rammed into a convoy of 78 vehicles carrying over 2500 CRPF troops on the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
In a strongly-worded statement earlier, the White House directed Pakistan to immediately end “support” and “safe haven” to all terror outfits on their soil.
“The United States calls on Pakistan to immediately end the support and safe haven provided to all terrorist groups operating on its soil, whose only goal is to sow chaos, violence, and terror in the region,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a late night statement on Thursday. “This attack only strengthens our resolve to bolster counterterrorism cooperation and coordination between the United States and India,” she said.
