Left wing extremism: 11,000 communist rebels, terrorists neutralized since 2016 – Esperon

More than 11,000 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) and Islamic State (IS)-linked terrorists have been neutralized by the military since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed power, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. said on Wednesday.
In his presentation during the pre-State of the Nation Address (SONA) security meeting, Esperon said 8,700 communist rebels, 1,057 Islamic State-linked Dawlah Islamiya members, 671 Abu Sayyaf members, 355 Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) members and 920 Maute members were neutralized since 2016.
He did not say how many of the rebels were killed or arrested. Dozens of Maute members were killed during the five-month siege in Marawi City last year.
Esperon said the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) conducted 6,165 operations against the communist rebels nationwide, leading to the confiscation of 2,246 firearms.

It also executed 807 ground operations against the Dawlah Islamiya, resulting in the seizure of 911 firearms. Meanwhile, 1,366 operations against the Abu Sayyaf Group led to the surrender of 255 of its members and the confiscation of 343 firearms.
To address terrorism, the Philippines enhanced its cooperation and coordination with neighboring countries including Indonesia and Malaysia, Esperon said.
“As an added feature, joint maritime command centers were activated,” he added.
Esperon said the Duterte administration will continue its commitment to attain “just, comprehensive and lasting peace for all.”
He cited the peace agreements with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), saying the government has been working with these groups to push for the passage and ratification of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL).
As for the Communist Party of the Philippines and the NPA, Esperon said the government will continue its peace process with the communist rebels but it will be subject to conditions set by the President.
“In the meantime, localized peace negotiations will be pursued,” he added.
