Complete defeat of ISIL in Syria will require political solution tocivil war - says Mogherini

YEREVAN, AUGUST 13, ARMENPRESS. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini said the “Islamic State” terrorist group continues to pose a threat to Syria, Iraq, as well as the region to Europe and beyond, "Armenpress" reports citing the EU official website.

“The use of civilians as human shields in Manbij, Syria, and the reported abduction of 2000 people by ISIL/Da’esh from the town shows that civilians are yet again the main victims of Syria’s conflict”, she said.

She said the recent military advances against Da’esh by the Global Coalition together with the Syrian Democratic Forces in North West Syria are welcome and the EU will continue to commit its efforts, as part of the Coalition, to its non-military fields of activity.

Mogherini said the complete defeat of ISIL in Syria will require a political solution to the civil war, addressing the main cause of its expansion in Syria.
