Syed Salahuddin Says Kashmir Issue Was Always About Islam, Not ‘Azaadi’

In what should hit the liberal sympathisers of Kashmiri separatists and terrorists hard, Hizbul Mujahideen founder Syed Salahuddin admitted that the Kashmir issue was not about “azaadi” but about Islam.

“The Kashmiri movement was Islamised from day one. Why do you think an educated young man, who has a bright future otherwise, is willing to die? Azaadi is not his objective. He is into militancy because he knows that if he dies for a noble cause, he would become a martyr, as per Islam. We tell him that he would get into the ‘real life’ after this death and he would get peace.”
In an exclusive interview granted to Kolkata daily The Telegraph, Salahuddin also said that the killing of Burhan Wani will make more Kashmiris turn to militancy.

When asked to comment on what Hafiz Saeed meant by “more trouble” for Kashmir during a prayer meeting for Wani held in Lahore, Salahuddin said that it mean “more attacks” across India.

“More trouble means that when the security forces of India are killing unarmed Kashmiris, we will intensify and escalate our attacks not just in Kashmir but elsewhere. There is no alternative left for us,” he told Sonia Sarkar of The Telegraph.
The terrorist leader said that all the Separatists in the Valley – Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Shabir Shah – are “with us on the same page. They are in touch with us on a regular basis.”

He threatens intensifying attacks and going to any extent “everywhere and anywhere” if the security forces “increase their assault on Kashmiris”.

“We will go to any extent. You will see it, we will intensify our attacks,” he told the paper in an interview over Skype.
When asked why his own sons are not part of the militancy, Salahuddin said that his sons are perhaps of the opinion that he is “not doing the right thing”.
Intelligence agencies had recently revealed that his wife, five sons and two daughters live in the Kashmir valley. Four of his sons are employed in government jobs.
Salahuddin had initially taken the responsibility of the Pathankot terror attacks even as India found evidence to link Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed and its leader Maulana Masood Azhar.
