Top Maoist waves white flag in Chatra

Ranchi: A top CPI Maoist of Kauleshwari zone across Palamu, Chatra and Gaya. Maheshi Yadav alias Banarsi alias Raghubansh, who was wanted in Bihar and Jharkhand especially in the border region, surrendered before DGP D K Pandey in Chatra district on Thursday. He carries a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head.

Jharkhand police spokesperson S N Pradhan said Yadav has strong connections with the Maoists of Yadav caste in southern Bihar and his surrender can have a significant role in holding the elections peacefully in Bihar.

"He was the zonal commander of Kauleshwari zone which is spread across Chatra, Gaya, and Palamu districts on the border. It is considered one of the strongest zones in the two states," Pradhan said.

Yadav is a native of Gaya district and has worked with Magadh zone and Koel Sankh zone of the Maoists earlier.

He was active in the organization for over 20 years during which he rose through the ranks.

"Around 18 cases of murder, extortion and explosive acts are pending against him," Chatra SP S K Jha said.

Jha was trying to convince Yadav for the past three months when he came to know that Yadav was not happy in the Maoist organization.

The police have claimed that Yadav was unhappy because the Maoists have deviated from the path of revolution that they had earlier chosen and decided to leave it forever.

The police interrogated him to know the Maoists plans for the Bihar polls.

However, they did not share any information regarding the interrogation. "We have shared the classified information with the Bihar Police," Pradhan said.

DGP Pandey, Pradhan, ADG special branch Anurag Gupta and several top police officials visited Chatra to witness his surrender on Thursday. Yadav was given a sum of Rs 1 lakh on surrender.

"His family members will be given Rs 5 lakh soon under the state government surrender policy," Jha said.

Yadav was forwarded to jail as he is wanted in several cases. According to the state government surrender policy, the state police will provide legal assistance to Yadav so that he can fight his case effectively and be released from jail.
