Austrian ISIL teenager member given 2.5-year jail term
An Austrian court has sentenced a teenager to two and a half years behind bars for joining the ranks of the Takfiri ISIL militant group operating in Syria.
On Friday, the Vienna-based court handed down the jail term to the 17-year-old Austrian citizen, identified as Oliver N., who has sustained serious injuries from a bomb attack in ISIL stronghold of Raqqa in eastern Syria, English-language news network Local reported.
Oliver told the judge that he was not directly involved in terrorist activities in Syria, denying that he had attended a terrorist training camp. He said the only time he carried a gun was when he had to guard an ISIL base in the strategic Syrian Kurdish city of Kobani, known as Ain al-Arab in Arabic, during clashes with Kurdish forces.
However, photos of him posted online by ISIL show the teenager dressed for battle and heavily armed, urging supporters to “kill infidels.”
Oliver also told the court judge that teenage ISIL members have to serve the terrorist group either as militants or bomber, and that whilst he was in Syria, between 60 and 70 teenagers were selected to carry out bomb attacks, among them a Mexican national.
The 17-year-old was arrested by Austrian officials in March at Vienna airport.
Authorities estimate more than 170 Australians have traveled to conflict-ridden Syria and neighboring Iraq to join Takfiri militant groups there.
According to an October 2014 report by the UN Security Council, 15,000 foreigners have flocked to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside the ISIL or other terrorist groups.
European countries have repeatedly expressed concern over ISIL’s influence across the continent. Authorities fear that the European militants will use their combat skills against their countries upon returning home.
ISIL controls some parts of Iraq and Syria. The terrorists have been carrying out horrific acts of violence, including public decapitations, against all Iraqi and Syrian communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians.
