Maoist open fire at weekly market in Dantewada, jawan killed, two injured

RAIPUR: Armed Maoists in civil uniform shot down an assistant constable, leaving two injured at a weekly market at Tumnar area of insurgent Dantewada district in Bastar region on Saturday.

It was around 12am when Maoists opened fire at crowded Tumnar weekly market and everyone started running for life. Assistant constable Manglu Mandavi was shot down by the Maoists. Mangdu had gone to collect information from his aides, which was tipped off to Maoists by their informers. The rebels had arrived in the market as common villagers, Dantewada police said.

Mandavi was posted at Kasoli camp of Chhattisgarh Armed Force and as per their information. While he was still breathing after been shot, Maoists stabbed his face with huge rock which eventually led to his death.

When Maoists tried to flee the spot, they were rounded up by few villagers and policemen present there who tried to stop them. While all of them succeeded to escape, one was caught by jawans.

But soon Maoists returned and opened indiscriminate firing to create terror in the region when two special police officers Ramlal Yadav and Munnaram Mandavi sustained injuries. The Maoist who was in custody got chance to flee.

Injured jawans were rushed to Geedam Primary Health Care Centre and later airlifted to Jagdalpur Medical College.

Police said that there were nearly seven Maoists between the age of 20 and 25 years holding country guns while few others were hiding behind trees and they shouted at villagers to vacate the place.

Police have launched a search operation in the region to nab offenders.
