Kalyan youth who joined ISIS asks for Gandhi book

Areeb Majeed had claimed that he was never engaged in terror activities during his stay with the ISIS.

Areeb Majeed, the Kalyan youth who joined the Islamic State before returning to India, on Wednesday asked for five “academic” books to read in jail. These include Forge your Future by former president A P J Abdul Kalam, Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography, The Story of My Experiments with Truth, and texts on construction management, structural analysis and railway engineering.

Majeed also told a Special court that jail authorities had showed him 50 passport size photographs of foreigners for identification. Areeb’s lawyer Wahab Khan said action ought to be taken against the three jail officials who allegedly “interrogated” his client for more than 10 minutes without the permission of the court or his lawyer.

While NIA officials said they had no knowledge about Areeb’s alleged interrogation, the court directed jail authorities to file a say in the matter.

“On Monday (January 12), after he met his family, three jailors showed him 50 passport size photographs of foreigners, outside his barracks. They asked him, do you know this person, do yo know that person,” Khan told the court.

Dressed in a white shirt and blue jeans, Areeb was brought to the special court near Fort for his fourth remand hearing at 11.30 am. He was seen without his signature black cap for the first time.

Areeb’s family came to court with the items he wanted — a Quran, a Wahl moustache trimmer with Duracell batteries, and slippers. The court, however, denied Areeb permission to take the trimmer with him for security reasons. Khan urged the court to change its mind, but the judge did not budge.

Khan also sought the CCTV footage of Areeb’s barracks in Arthur road jail and said that despite previous court orders, Areeb was still kept in solitary confinement.

Khan sought permission from the judge to let Areeb meet his family for 10 minutes in court. After Areeb’s mother took him in his arms, the family sat together in a circle and talked. For the first time, NIA officials did not intrude. He was taken back to the jail at 1.40 pm with a packet containing a pair of jeans and a grey shirt, holding the Quran close to his chest. Meanwhile, the judge extended Areeb’ s judicial custody till January 28.
