Advance surgical kits, medical books help Maoists treat hurt comrades

The Maoists usually carry their injured comrades and even their bodies following encounters. It is the Maoist strategy acted upon swiftly that often prevents security forces from getting hold of the guerrillas, dead or alive (injured), after a gunfight.

Questions arise as to how they treat the injured cadres. The recovery of various medical books and surgical tools from a Maoist camp in the Naxal heartland of Abhujmad in the forested terrain of south Chhattisgarh last year strengthened the police suspicion of rebels receiving medical training to handle emergency treatment or carry out first aid.

The recovery of advance surgical kits, tools and the voluminous books on imparting knowhow and to instill understanding on how to treat and heal bullet wounds surprised the forces.

Given the precision with which the guerillas had cut open a CRPF trooper's abdomen and planted an improvised explosive device (IED) after removing internal organs in 2013, the doctors concluded that the Maoists had acquired knowledge to carry-out surgical procedures.

The outlawed Left-Wing Extremists, besides undertaking the routine exercise on use of arms, are simultaneously getting familiarised with the applications of surgical equipment and the utility of medical tools used in surgical processes in their camps primarily for treating gunshot wounds. According to additional director general of police (anti-Maoist operation) R.K. Vij, the seized surgical kits from the Maoist camp in Abhujmad suggest that the rebels are being acquainted and taught the process of treating lesions, remove bullets from body or even attempt minor surgical processes.
