Social media impact: Twitter suspends Hafiz Saeed's account after Rahul Kanwal blows the whistle
TV Today Network Managing Editor Rahul Kanwal on Monday got the Twitter account of 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed suspended by drawing attention to the fact that social media company should have a policy barring "globally designated terrorists from spewing hate on its platform".
Hundreds of Twitter users in India and elsewhere have praised Kanwal for pointing this out and getting Twitter to suspend Hafiz Saeed's account.
Moment after this Hafiz Saeed's Twitter account was blocked.
On several occasions, the Islamist leader has been accused of using his account to voice his opinions against India. However, Twitter gave no reason for why it suspended his account.
India has often criticised Pakistan for letting Saeed, accused of masterminding the 2008 attacks in Mumbai, hold rallies in Pakistan, saying it was "nothing short of mainstreaming terrorism".
Last week, Saeed warned Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the Kashmir dispute needed to be resolved immediately otherwise Jihad against India will continue.
"Narendra Modi should be straightforward and resolve the Kashmir dispute, and if you are not ready to resolve it, then God willing, Kashmir will be the gateway and we will Jihad against India," Hafiz Saeed, head of terror group Jamaat-ud-Dawa, said.
A Twitter account, purportedly belonging to Saeed, had also blamed India for the floods in Pakistan. "India has used water to attack Pakistan, We are in state of War. India's water aggression must be taken to the UN security council," said a tweet from @Jud_Official handle, managed by Saeed's media team.
