Media And Government Blamed As Another Mandera Attack Leaves 36 People Dead

Written by

It is less than 2 weeks since the first attack occurred, when Al-Shabaab insurgents ambushed a Nairobi-bound bus, paraded Christians in the bus and shot them at close range, killing 28 of them.

This is news that no single Kenyan wants to hear. Bad news that come, barely 28 days to the end of the year.

2014 has seen Kenyans cry sorrowfully for losing their relatives, friends and family members, thanks to the poor levels of intelligence that Kenya is employing to curb external aggression.

And now following the latest attacks in Mandera that have left more than 36 Kenyans dead, the government and the media are facing increased pressure and criticism. The government in particular has been accused of failing to provide security for all Kenyans and the media is accused of not reporting matters as they are.

Among those castigating the media is blogger Robert Alai who says that the media is now supporting the government in lying to Kenyans about the latest Mandera massacre by relegating the most important news to back pages and doing public relations for the government.

"Kenyan media still doing PR for the govt. News of the attacks relegated to back pages. Hidden and made inconsequential. #ManderaMassacre"

The biggest question is, what should the media have done to prevent the Mandera massacre? Has the media indeed failed to report the happenings as they should be? These and many more are some of the questions Alai’s jibe is raising.

Who is to blame for the loss of lives experienced almost every week in the country? Recently, President Uhuru Kenyatta made it clear that security should start with an individual before the government provides security. What do you think about this statement?
