Leading Republican Lawmaker Linked with US Neo-Nazi Groups
U.S. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, gave a speech at a conference of white nationalists when he was a state lawmaker in 2002, according to the Washington Post
Steve Scalise, the new House Majority Whip, admitted attending the white supremacist event but asserted he did not know the ideology behind it.
On Monday, the new U.S. House Majority Whip, Steve Scalise admitted to giving a speech to to white nationalists groups in 2002.
The event was hosted by an organization founded by former Ku Klux klan leader, David Duke.
However, Scalise, the number 3 Republican in the House, asserted that at that moment he was not aware of the ideology of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization (EURO), to whom he gave the speech.
Instead, his spokeswoman, Moira Bagley explained that Scalise attended that event held in New Orleans to only oppose the increasing taxes on the middle class.
“He has never been affiliated with the abhorrent group in question. The hate-fueled ignorance and intolerance that group projects is in stark contradiction to what Mr. Scalise believes and practices as a father, a husband, and a devoted Catholic,” told Bagley to the Washington Post, whose first unveiled Scalise participation in the EURO’S event.
Scalise was a Louisiana State lawmaker when he addressed EURO members.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, a leading civil rights organization in the United States, classifies EURO as a hate group that is used as a platform to publicize David Duke’s books.
The revelation came at a key moment for the Republican Party, as it prepares to take over the control of the Senate after winning November elections. The party has warned it plans to reverse several measures passed by President Barack Obama in the next legislative period.
