Germany planning to train Kurdish fighters in Iraq

BERLIN (AP) " Germany plans to participate in an international military mission aimed at training Kurdish fighters battling Islamic extremists in Iraq.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman says Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet will decide on the mission next week, but he wouldn't confirm a report in the Bild Thursday that more than 100 German soldiers would be sent to northern Iraq.

Spokesman Martin Schaefer said the government is looking into logistical details of the mission, to which other European countries will contribute.

Germany already has provided weapons to Kurdish forces fighting the Islamic State group and provided military training for Kurdish fighters at a military base in Germany.

Military missions abroad need approval by German parliament.
