35 People Killed by Suspected Militants, Assam on Red Alert
Guwahati: 35 people were killed by suspected militants of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) or NDFB(S) in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts of Assam on Tuesday evening.
Five people were killed in Kokrajhar, while 30 were killed in Sonitpur. The killings took place in five separate attacks by the militants.
The attacks may be retaliation by the militants, say police officers; several suspected militants of the NDFB-S have been killed by the Army and the state police in encounters in the last few months.
The victims were reportedly all members of tribal communities.The entire state has been put on red alert and the international border between India and Bhutan in lower Assam has been sealed.
Counter-insurgency operations have been launched in the Bodoland Territorial Area District, which comprises the four districts of Kokrajhar, Baksa, Udalguri and Chirang.The largest number of casualties were reportedly in Paboi reserved forest area near the border with Arunachal Pradesh in Sonitpur district, said senior police officials.
