Maoist rebel burnt alive for 'raping' a girl

A member of People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter outfit of CPI-Maoist, was set on fire on Thursday morning for allegedly raping a girl in a village in Simdega district.

The deceased has been identified as Amar Khes (22), area commander of PLFI and resident of neighbouring Odisha.

According to the police, around four members of PLFI had visited the Ghattari village on Wednesday night to collect levy from the villagers, who nabbed Khes and set him on fire.

A senior police officer said the villagers had set up a trap to nab the PLFI area commander, after a village panchayat had 'sentenced' him to death a few days ago on charges of raping the girl.

On Thursday morning, Khes and his accomplices were making advances at another girl, who called villagers for help. Though three of Khes' friends escaped, the villagers caught Khas, tied him to a tree on the outskirts of the village and set him on fire.

An officer-in-charge of Tetaitanagar police station said, "We have lodged a complaint against unknown people for setting Khes on fire."
