Leftist rebels hit Philippine official for linking them to drug syndicates

MANILA, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) denounced on Sunday as "an absolute lie" the allegation of Philippine Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin that the New People's Army (NPA) has link with and protects drug syndicates in the country.

Gazmin has accused the NPA, an armed wing of the CPP, of being involved in maintaining and cultivating of marijuana plantations in the northern region of Cordillera and it has an "unholy alliance" with the drug syndicates that allegedly finance the rebels' weapons.

"Wherever the revolutionary forces and their people's army succeed in establishing the people's democratic government, drug syndicates as well as other criminal groups are expelled from the areas under the sway of revolutionary authorities," said the CPP in a statement.

"Under the people's democratic government, leaders of these drug syndicates have been subjected to arrest, prosecution and judgment by the people's courts and have been meted out appropriate punishment for their crimes," it added.

The group said that Gazmin's pronouncements were nothing but a rehash of the baseless and unproven allegations made years ago by the Drug Enforcement Agency of the United States.

The CPP is the umbrella organization of the NPA-National Democratic Front, which has been waging war against the government for over four decades.
