Top Masbate NPA head falls

A suspected leader of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army in Masbate was captured during military and police operations this week in Barangay Lanang, Aroroy, Masbate, National Police spokesman Chief Supt. Generoso Cerbo Jr. said Friday.
He identified the arrested rebel leader as Ruel Vargas alias Weng, allegedly a member of the Executive Committee of the Masbate Provincial Party Committee of the CPP-NPA.
Cerbo said investigators later discovered that Vargas was also the suspect in the killing of Nelson Nadura, a radio broadcaster-commentator, in 2003.
“[The] PNP Task Force USIG is confident of a successful prosecution of the 2003 slay case of Masbate broadcaster Nelson Nadura following his capture. He was tagged as primary suspect in the murder,” Cerbo said.
He said Vargas is the subject of a warrant of arrest for the crimes of murder and rebellion docketed under CC Nos. 127-83 and 137-17, respectively, issued by Judge Maximino Ables of the Regional Trial Court Branch 47 of Masbate City.
