KABUL, March 16 (Xinhua) -- A local leader with the Haqqani militant group was arrested in eastern Afghan province of Khost on Saturday, the NATO-led coalition force said.

"An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani leader during an operation in Musa Khel district, Khost province, today," the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a press release.

The Taliban-linked Haqqani network carried out many high- profile attacks on security forces mostly in eastern Afghan provinces and the capital Kabul.

"The leader is accused of having operational control over multiple extremist cells and has personally led fighters in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces," it added.

In addition, the joint forces also captured more than two dozens of insurgents including several leaders in different operations across the country on Thursday and Friday, the release said.

The Afghan security forces and ISAF troops have intensified cleanup operations against Taliban and other militants recently. But the insurgents responded with bombings.

On Wednesday, 11 people, including several family members of Afghan parliament speaker, were killed and eight others wounded when a suicide bomber hit a crowd watching traditional game of Buzkashi in northern Kunduz province.
