Kenya: Crack Squad to Hunt Down MRC Militants

A hit squad has been deployed to Coast region to hunt down the armed militia behind the recent elections day-eve attacks that left at least 18 people, including nine police officers, dead.
The undercover officers have been deployed from the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters and will be stationed permanently at Mombasa provincial police headquarters.
Multiple sources said Provincial Intelligence Officer Ambrose Munyasia has been appointed to oversee the operations and report to the Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo.
Police have also reviewed their security plans in Coast to avoid further loss of life of officers or civilians.Coast provincial police boss Aggrey Adoli said the team's mandate is to defeat plans by the militia suspected to be the military wing of the banned Mombasa Republican Council.
"We have a combined force around tasked to trail and apprehend the militants and possiblly prosecute their financiers," said Adoli.
Adoli said the government will mount a major crackdown on the group's leaders and financiers in order to contain the gang's criminal operations.
The Star has established that the team comprises commandos drawn from the GSU's elite Recce unit. It also includes detectives from the Special Crime Prevention Unit and other highly trained officers from Nairobi and Mombasa the CID headquarters.
The Coast head of police operations, Joseph Muthee, has been appointed to take over from the late Changamwe police boss Otieno Awuor in an acting capacity.
