Sustained peace efforts in Abra draw more rebels to surrender

BANGUED, Abra, Sept. 7 (PIA) -- Two members of the New People’s Army voluntarily surrendered to the 503rd Infantry Brigade under the leadership of Col. Eliseo C. Posadas through the Church Military Advisory Group (CMAG) and local peace talks participants.

The surrenderees are alias Sakay, 55, of Brgy. Lat-ey, Malibcong, an NPA member for 14 years, and alias Diego, 17, of Brgy. Buneg, Lacub, who was with the underground movement for less than a year.

The two were presented to Governor Eustaquio P. Bersamin last September 5 for proper documentation and for processing the immediate cash assistance from the provincial government through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO).

Sakay served the NPA organization as overseer of the education department of the Abra Party Committee (APCOM) while Diego had been assigned mostly in the tri-boundary of Abra, Mountain Provinc,e and Ilocos Sur.

They shared their fears and difficulties as they experienced being hungry most of the time during military operations. They also said they realized the futility of their armed struggle, thus their decision to return to mainstream society.

Posadas said the surrender of the two was a result of the peace talks conducted between the relatives and tribal elders in collaboration with the local officials and the religious sectors in the communities.

The two former rebels were immediately brought to Abra Provincial Hospital for medical check-up and were given spiritual enlightenment by pastors from the Abra Ministerial Associations.

Posadas said the returneess will be processed for proper reintegration into the community through the “Kabsatko, Ipategko” Program.

The program aims to enrich the rehabilitation of all returnees under the caring scheme with active participation of the national government agencies, local government units, non-government organizations ,as well as stakeholders and other concerned individuals.

Posadas assured that he will help those who want to come down and join mainstream society.

He also guaranteed that the Philippine Army in Abra, in coordination with the provincial government, is ready to accept and accommodate surrenderees in the KIP for their smooth reintegration to mainstream society.(JDP/MTBB-PIA CAR,Abra)
