Colombian President confirms ‘exploratory’ talks with FARC rebels

Colombia's President, Juan Manuel Santos, has confirmed that his government had held exploratory talks with the country's main leftist rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Santos said that he has fulfilled his “commitment” to seek peace and that the details of the discussion with FARC would be released in the next few days. “The negotiations should lead to the end of the conflict not the extension,” the President said in his brief address, adding that the authorities will try to avoid past mistakes. Meanwhile, local media reports that the sides have signed a deal to begin peace talks in October.
