Two policemen injured in Mandera IED attack

Two police officers were on Saturday evening seriously injured in a remote controlled land mine attack in Mandera East that is suspected to have been masterminded by members of the al Shabaab group. The officers, who were patrolling the Kenya-Somali border sustained serious injuries on their hands and legs after being hit by the Improvised Electronic Device.
According a source who stays near the place where the incident took place, the grenade had been buried in the soil  under a tree which is normally used  by the officers to  rest after the days patrol ,exploded a few meters from where they were. “It is as if the one who was controlling the remote, miscalculated because he detonated it before they could get under the shade of the tree where it had been planted in the soil, he must have done it in a harry because maybe he was watching them from a distance as they approached the place therefore missing his timing,” otherwise we could have been talking of deaths had he took his time,” said the source who spoke to the Star on the phone.
The two who sustained injuries on their hands and legs occasioned by the shrapnel’s that come out of the device were quickly rushed to the Mandera district hospital for treatment. Northeastern Deputy PPO Philip Ndolo while confirming the incident said that the officers were not in danger as alleged. “They were not injured as such, just slight injuries on their bodies, we could have been speaking a different story had the IED exploded right where they were, “said Ndolo.
Ndolo who refused to confirm or deny any involvement of the Al shabaab militia group to the incident however said “Police are holding into one suspect who would assist with information. “one suspect is being held by police officers in connection with the incident, be believe he is involved since he was seen being drooped at the place of the scene just a few minutes before the incident took place, he will assist us with crucial information which will help us get those who committed this heinous act and the others that are behind the others that have occurred before,” added The deputy PPO.
One month ago, two military officers were seriously injured after the military lorry they were travelling in came under remote controlled landmine attack in Mandera town.
