Grenade blast kills 1, injures 3 in Maguindanao; village chief killed in ambush in North Cotabato

KORONADAL -- One person died and three were injured in a grenade blast in Maguindanao on Thursday night while a village chief died in an ambush in Magpet town, North Cotabato.

Col. Prudencio R. Asto, public affairs division chief of the Philippine Army’s 6th Infantry Division, confirmed in a radio interview on Thursday that Jaijar Mlah of Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao died when he was hit by shrapnel from a grenade blast around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Mr. Asto said Mr. Mlah was resting in his house when a suspect lobbed a fragmentation grenade on the roof. The explosion also hurt three of Mr. Mlah’s sisters -- Jasen, Janilyn and Sabuddin, all minors.


The injured victims were immediately brought to a hospital in Maguindanao but later transferred to the Cotabato regional hospital as their conditions remain critical. Reports said Mr. Mlah was a former Kagawad of Barangay Datu Hoffer of Shariff Aguak.


In a separate incident in Magpet, North Cotabato, former Balite barangay chief Danilo Senados died in an ambush on Wednesday night. A police report said Mr. Senados was gunned down by individuals riding in tandem on a motorcycle. Mr. Senados was allegedly involved in trading fake gold bars and the police said the attack could be linked to the issue.
