Bomb attacks kill 11 people in central Iraq
BAGHDAD, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Two bomb attacks killed 11 people and wounded 12 others in and near the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Wednesday morning, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua.
One of the attacks occurred in the early morning when a roadside bomb went off outside a house of a government-backed Awakening Council group member at al-Wahda district in the town of Madain, some 30 km southeast of Baghdad, the source said on condition of anonymity.
Minutes later, another roadside bomb detonated as neighbors gathered at the scene of the first blast, killing eight people and wounding 10 others, the source said.
The Awakening Council group, also known as Sons of Iraq movement or Sahwa, consists of mostly anti-U.S. Sunni insurgent militant groups, who turned their rifles to fight al-Qaida network after Sahwa's leaders became dismayed by al-Qaida's brutality and religious zealotry in the country.
Meanwhile, a bomb planted at a house in Ghazaliyah district in western Baghdad detonated and destroyed part of the house, killing three women and wounding two more family members, the source added.
Violence is still common in the Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease since its peak in 2006 and 2007 when the country was engulfed in sectarian killings.
