7 rebels, 2 state militias dead in Bukidnon clash

COTABATO, Philippines (Xinhua) - At least seven leftist rebels and two government militias were killed in separate clashes yesterday in the volatile southern Philippines.
Fierce fighting broke out between government troops and New People's Army rebels in the remote village of Bunacao, San Fernando township in the province of Bukidnon, police commander Rustom Duran said today.
Duran said government troops launched offensive against rebels behind the series of attacks in the region.
The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for more than four decades. The Philippine military estimates that some 4,700 NPA guerrilla fighters are scattered in more than 60 provinces across the country.
