Home Ministry identifies 2 rights groups linked with naxalites

Two civil rights groups working for tribal people in Odisha and Jharkhand are acting as fronts for naxal groups, a report by the Union Home Ministry has said. The two groups were using displacement of local communities as their main plank, the report further stated.
The ministry has named the Niyamgiri Suraksha Samithi in Odisha and Visthapan Virodhi Jan Vikas Andolan in Jharkhand as the two organisations acting as fronts for Maoist groups.
The report says that the NSS had campaigned against mining activity by the Odisha Mining Corporation at the Niyamgiri Hills which would have given the Vedanta Group access to natural resources.
The VVJVA on the other hand opposed the decision by the Jharkhand government to amend two tenancy laws which allowed the use of agriculture land of tribal people for non-agricultural purposes.
The Home Ministry report said that the Maoists tried to strengthen coordination between its mass organisations and other like-minded organisations to undertake programmes against alleged state violence and for protection of democratic rights. In the Niyamgiri Hills, the naxalites continued to guide the activities of the NSS, the report further read.
