US: FBI investigates Srinivas Kuchibhotla murder case as ‘hate crime’

Washington, March 1: According to a statement issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the prime federal law enforcement agency of the United States is investigating the recent shooting episode in Kansas as a 'hate crime'. "The FBI in conjunction with the US Attorney's Office and the Department of Justice are investigating the incident as a hate crime," read the FBI statement. "The FBI continues to work jointly with the Olathe Police Department while investigating the Kansas incident," the statement added.

Last week, Indian-origin techie Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, was murdered in Kansas, US. His last rites took place in Hyderabad--Srinivas' home town--on Tuesday. Srinivas and his friend Alok Madasani (32) were shot fire guns by 51-year-old US navy veteran Adam Purinton at a bar in Kansas. Luckily, Alok, who was injured in the attack, survived. American native Ian Grillot (24), who came to the rescue of two Indian men, took bullet shots during the attack.

Currently, Ian is undergoing treatment at a hospital. The killing of Srinivas, many believe, is the result of anti-immigrant stand taken by President Donald Trump. In fact, before the attack, the accused verbally abused both Srinivas and Alok and asked them to leave the country

Meanwhile, several days after the horrific incident, Trump has denounced the killing of Srinivas saying the nation condemns 'hate and evil' on Tuesday. Trump began his State of the Union address on Tuesday night by referring to racism and bias crimes, including the killing of Srinivas last week and the threats against Jewish institutions and desecration of their cemeteries. "Last week's shooting in Kansas city reminds us that while we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms," Trump said.
