A suicide bomber has killed at least 20 people, believed to be militants of the Lashkar-e-Islam group, in north-west Pakistan, officials say. The Taliban said the suicide bombing was a revenge attack. There have been sporadic clashes between the groups. The blast in Khyber tribal agency came hours after 10 soldiers and at least 22 Lashkar-e-Islam militants were killed in clashes in the same area. The military and several militant groups are fighting to control Khyber. None of the reports can be independently confirmed as there is no media access to the area. A spokesman for Lashkar-e-Islam claimed that only six fighters were killed in the suicide blast, which happened in the remote Nahaqai area of Tirah valley in Khyber. A local official told BBC Urdu's Rifatullah Orakzai that the suicide bomber detonated his explosives jacket in the presence of a large number of Lashkar-e-Islam fighters. Austria’s Nazi Frat Boys?

A fraternity ball on Holocaust Day raises old questions 01/03/2012 “Nazis,” a passer-by in his 50s muttered, giving us a sideways glance. Our clothes marked us out: white tie and a shimmery blue ball gown. Not reckoning with the small army of undercover journalists, the consensus seemed that only neo-Nazis would be donning ball regalia that night. It was 27 Jan. – the day that people across the West commemorated the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops. This year, it was also the day that the Wiener Korporationsring (WKR), an association of German-nationalist student fraternities, held its annual ball at the Hofburg, Austria’s historical seat of power. The coincidence, the organisers claimed, was accidental. Indeed, other balls were taking place that night, but received little attention. This was because the WKR Ball is a perverse highlight in Vienna’s ball season, every year attracting scores of protesters opposing the fraternities’ supposedly racist ideals – and their poli

Some 4000 militant neo-Nazis operate in CzechRep - study

01.03.2012 12:38:32 Prague - There are some 4000 militant neo-Nazis in the Czech Republic, including a 400-strong hard core, and a part of them pose a latent risk of switching to terrorism, experts focusing on extremism say in a study worked out for the Interior Ministry and released on the its website today. The neo-Nazi scene poses a permanent threat in terms of crime, including violent crime. The number of individual attacks on Romanies is expected to rise in the country in the next five years, says the study completed by a team led by political scientist Miroslav Mares. The 50-page study mainly focuses on the threats the neo-Nazi movement poses to the integration of foreigners in the Czech Republic. The study describes the history, development and present of the neo-Nazi scene, as well as potential risks, new streams in the movement, its ideological basis and symbols. The experts also recommend methods with which to prevent neo-Nazism. For example, the work with young people a

FARC's pledges to be taken with a pinch of salt David Roberts

There is good reason to be skeptical about the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia's (FARC's) announcement that it will halt "extortionate" kidnappings and release 10 military officials it is holding. It is, after all, not the first time the guerrilla/terrorist/insurgent/rebel group (whatever you wish to call them) has made similar noises, only to revert to the old tactics once the publicity died down. On the other hand, if the FARC is true to its word and actually follows up with concrete actions, the latest announcement could be a step in the right direction, possibly laying the ground for a settlement to the nearly 50-year conflict. That would be of great benefit to Colombia and the region as a whole, and particularly to industries such as hydrocarbons and mining - where Colombia has huge potential but which have been hurt more than most by the security shortfalls in the country in recent decades. The FARC have all but lost any ideological credibility they

Spain faces long road to heal wounds after ETA surrender

By Sinikka Tarvainen Mar 1, 2012, 2:07 GMT Madrid - 'You stole my adolescence,' an unidentified Spaniard tells an unidentified member of the Basque separatist group ETA. 'Do you know how I was left when you killed my father? You did not only kill him, but you left me completely empty. I was full of life, and now I live without strength. I am no longer myself. I am someone else.' The meeting between the imprisoned separatist and the child of his victim - described by the daily El Mundo without giving the names of the participants - is part of a healing process that Spain is facing after ETA ended its 43-year armed campaign in October. More than 10 such meetings have taken place, partly on the initiative of jailed ETA members trying to face up to the immense pain the group created by killing about 850 people during its campaign for a sovereign Basque state. ETA targeted mainly army and police officers, politicians, judges and others seen as representatives of the Sp

Anonymous backs Vikileaks creator as Tories call him on carpet

The online hacker group Anonymous is taking up the cause of the Liberal staff member who posted salacious details of Vic Toews’s divorce to protest a bill that would give police greater access to the personal information of Internet users. In a video released Thursday, the day before it promises to reveal more embarrassing information about the Public Safety Minister, Anonymous said the Vikileaks30 Twitter account created by Adam Carroll, a staffer in the Liberal research bureau, exposed what it sees as Mr. Toews’s hypocrisy. The clip, which features a computer-generated woman’s voice dubbed over a dramatic musical score, is one in a series created by Anonymous to protest against Bill C-30, which the government has called the Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act, and its champion. The group argues Vikileaks was created to protest legislation that would allow the Canadian government “to spy on its own people.” But, it says, when the Liberal Party found out that one of th

‘Anonymous’ Hackers Claim They Were Infiltrated

LIMA, Peru (AP) — People identifying themselves as activists in the Anonymous hacker movement said Wednesday it wasn’t technical prowess but police infiltration that yielded 25 arrests in a sweep in Europe and South America. In conversations in an online chat room where Spanish-speaking activists in the Americas and Spain regularly gather, they said nearly all of those arrested had been active on a single website used by the group. Among those detained were a Spaniard known by the online nickname “Pacotron” or “Thunder,” according to Spanish police and a communique issued by Anonymous Iberoamerica, which said he lives in Malaga. The statement by the loosely organized collective’s Spanish-language branch identified another of those arrested as a Spaniard known as “Troy” who it said owned computer servers in “such distant places as Slovakia and Romania.” Interpol, which announced the arrests Tuesday, did not say how it encountered the 25 suspects, who it says were involved in cyb

Two senior military officers were killed and several wounded, a Somali MP and other officials told the BBC. This is the first major attack by al-Shabab since it lost control last week of Baidoa, an important stronghold. BBC Somali Service analyst Abdullahi Sheikh says the Garbaharey attack was a major military operation - and a strong indication that the movement's retreat from key positions does not mean it has given up the fight. He says al-Shabab, which recently announced it was joining al-Qaeda, may be weakened - but it is far from a spent force and still controls swathes of territory in south and central Somalia. MP injured Garbaharey has a major presence of heavily armed Ethiopian forces, which are supporting Somali government tr
