Red terror unabated in Gadchiroli

Stunned over spate of resignations by Panchayat functionaries in Gadchiroli district due to Maoist threat, a worried Union home ministry has made a fervent appeal to the Maharashtra government to immediately provide security to all panchayat workers in the area.
According to Intelligence reports reaching ministry of home affairs (MHA), the total resignations on account of Maoist threat have gone up to 83 during the last three months. This includes 69 Panchayat functionaries, 9 political activists and five members of Tanta Mukti Samiti.
Sources said due to extensive Maoist threat campaigns against Panchayat functionaries in Gadchiroli, five more panchayat functionaries of Govindgoan under Aheri police station have tendered their resignations to the chairman of the Aheri Panchayat Samiti on June 5.
The MHA rues that no effective action was taken by the state on advisories sent to the government at least on four occasions in the recent past and feels that if increasing influence of Maoist writ goes unchallenged for some more time Gadchiroli would become as good as a Maoist liberated zone.
Sources said movement of armed Maoists is continuing unabated in Gadchiroli and during the last few days they have intensified their threat campaigns in areas falling under Dhanora, Korchi, Aheri and Bhamragarh police stations.
“How strongly the Maoist influence is growing in Gadchiroli can be gauged from the fact that during the current month a large village meeting was organised in the Aheri police station area where locals were openly instructed to disassociate with panchayat functionaries,” sources said.
