Tamil Tigers' Defeat Holds Lessons for Pakistan

Jun 08, 2009 The 26-year-old war the Tamil separatists had been fighting for a sovereign homeland within Sri Lanka ended on May 17/09 with their defeat and surrender. Calling themselves the Liberation Tamil Tigers Elam (LTTE), they had often resorted to terrorism to project and promote their cause. They are even credited with being the innovators of suicide bombings. Their surrender even after such a lengthy war, interspersed with two peace deals like the Swat ceasefire, portends the shape of things to come for the Taliban of Pakistan and the bloodbaths the civilian population of that country will have to go through till the purveyors of terror are eliminated. The Tamil Tigers’ surrender also disproves the commonly held myth that a traditional army cannot win a war against guerrilla bands. The myth probably spread after the Vietnam War. The deciding factor is perhaps the force of logic and of truth in the stand of the winning side. The LTTE was once seen as the world’s most effici

Naxalism: a Rs 1500 crore red corridor empire

Image
Snehesh Alex Philip Ranchi, June 7 (PTI) Naxalism, which started off as a people's movement, has now become a nearly Rs 1500 crore organised extortion business in the form of 'levy', police and central security officials said. CPI (Maoist) and especially its splinter groups, which extort the money hardly pump it back for running the movement but instead use it to maintain luxurious life-styles for their masters, the officials said. The Naxal literature and documents seized by central security agencies and state police forces during their operations have revealed intricate details of "levy" extorted by groups which run in several hundred crores every year. The 'levy' is not only paid by the contractors working in the areas dominated by the Naxals but also by the industrial houses including some of the nationally reputed ones, the officials said. Though, CPI (Maoist) still remains the prominent Naxal group in Jharkhand, there are other sp

Comment: Terrorising cricket

By Malik Arshed Gilani Sunday, 07 Jun, 2009 | 01:39 PM PST | The robust attitude exhibited by the England team by returning to India, whatever their motives, must represent the right way to fight the evils of all terrorism. Pakistan Cities under threat Media Gallery Sri Lankan cricketers return to training The two comments credited to the ICC President on Terrorism need attention; ‘Pakistan is another country,’ obviously with reference to India, and ‘security in India is different!’ Undoubtedly, considerable security risks do exist in Pakistan but incidents show that risks are prevalent to varying degrees in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. It appears that different standards are used to judge these risks by visiting occidental teams and the ICC. A cynic might even conclude that the dangers from terrorism reduce directly in proportion to the rise

www.chinaview.cn 2009-06-06 00:46:57               PARIS, June 5 (Xinhua) -- French Defence Minister Herve Morin said Friday that the possibility of a terrorist attack on Air France Flight 447 cannot be ruled out.     "We have no right to exclude terrorism," he told journalists, but adding that he had not heard of any threats to the flight or of any group or individual claiming responsibility for bringing down the aircraft.     The Airbus A330-200 airliner with 228 people aboard went missing over the Atlantic Sunday night after leaving Rio de Janeiro to Paris. ISI continues to maintain links with LeT, JuD: CIA

7 Jun 2009, 1216 hrs IST, PTI WASHINGTON: Observing that the ISI continues to maintain links with terror outfits like the LeT and JuD, a former top CIA official says the US needs to be tough with the Pakistani establishment and send a clear message to it that it cannot pursue a policy of "selective counter-terrorism." Pointing out that the ISI today is in a "mortal battle" with the Pakistani Taliban in the restive Swat valley, Bruce Riedel, who co-chaired the inter-agency committee of the Obama administration which formulated the Af-Pak policy, said Islamabad has been pursuing "selective counter-terrorism" measures. "In the Swat Valley, the Pakistani army and the ISI are fighting a very serious struggle against a part of the jihadist infrastructure. ISI has also been helpful in fighting part of the al-Qaida infrastructure. "But the complexity, the problem is that ISI continues to have relations with groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, with what
